Bodhi

Bodhi is an open source Linux distribution built around the Enlightenment desktop environment and based on the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu Linux. It is a customizable and minimalistic distribution that combines the beauty of the Enlightenment desktop with a great collection of applications and package management utilities.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live CDs

The system is distributed as Live CD ISO images that can be used to deploy the computing environment on any 64-bit and 32-bit machine. The boot medium is designed to automatically start the live environment in ten seconds. However, users can use it to directly install the distribution, boot the live environment in safe graphics mode, boot the operating system that is currently installed on the first disk, and test the system memory for errors.

Enlightenment is the default desktop environment

Bodhi is well known for providing users with the latest builds of the lightweight and elegant Enlightenment desktop environment. The desktop is comprised only of a dock, which is placed on the upper part of the screen. The dock can be used to quickly switch between virtual workspaces, change the system locale, access the network connections, modify the volume, update the system, or access the applications and settings.

The main menu can be accessed using the left mouse click on the desktop. It can be used to open pre-installed applications, navigate the file system, run a certain command, set the virtual desktops, manage shelfs, change desktop widgets, wallpapers and themes.

Default applications

Default applications include only the Midori web browser, Leafpad text editor, Synaptic Package Manager, and EConnMan connection manager. There are also various Enlightenment applications, such as the powerful and complex Terminology terminal emulator, Enlightenment file manager, eDeb package installer, eCcess system tool, eSudo and a screenshot utility.

Bottom line

We recommend this operating system to all Ubuntu fans who are looking for a stable computing environment powered by Enlightenment. It runs well on low-end machines and old hardware.

What is new in version 4.3.1:

• In a friendly reminder that I am still human - we had a pretty major issue with one of the Bodhi 4.3.0 discs. Most issues we can simply patch via the package manager after the fact without releasing a new set of ISO images, but this issue was fairly unique. The new system was failing to add the official Bodhi repository to the installed system. Because of this I've published a set of discs with the 4.3.1 version number. You will only be affected by this issue if you installed Bodhi 4.3.0 using the "Standard" release.

What is new in version 4.2.0:

• This release serves to package up the fixes for a few bugs that slipped through the cracks in the 4.0.0 release, as well as provided updated package sets for the install ISO images. Most notably these ISO images come with EFL 1.18.4, Linux Kernel 4.8, and a new Moksha Theme based on the "Arc Dark" theme. Existing Bodhi 4.0.0 users already have the bug fixes incorporated into these ISO images, but they will need to manually install the newer kernel and theme if they wish to utilize them.

What is new in version 3.1.1:

• The 3.1.0 release we released back in August had an issue where users were not always prompted automatically for wireless passwords when connecting to encrypted networks. This lead to enough confusion / user frustration that we feel it warrants an updated install image now as opposed to waiting for our scheduled 3.2.0 release early 2016.
• In addition to the wireless bug fix, this release includes all package updates that have been released since August as well as a web app launcher of the Bodhi AppCenter.

What is new in version 3.1.0:

• This release is a bigger deal for the Bodhi team than our previous update releases have been in the past. The reason for this is because this release is the first to use the Moksha Desktop which we have forked from E17. Because it is built on the rock solid foundation that E17 provides, even this first release of the Moksha Desktop is stable and is something I feel comfortable using in a production environment.
• Existing Bodhi Linux 3.0.0 users will not be automatically moved to Moksha via system updates. Folks who want to move from their current Enlightenment desktop to Moksha can do so by following the directions here.

What is new in version 3.0.0 RC2:

• After much hard work and lots of learning, I am proud to announce the release of our 3.0 Legacy RC2 version. Breaking from tradition, our other versions will no longer be released at the same time due to our recent change in head devs and because the others are being built on E19. I have stripped E19 and revived the E17 desktop and engage for this release, bringing extra speed and consistency back to legacy machines. (You're welcome)
• This is my first official version of Bodhi, so expect a few small mistakes. While I have changed the look of Bodhi quite a bit, I have worked hard to maintain the same feel, stability, speed, and functionality that our users have come to love over the years, only chaging things when I thought it improved usability. Hopefully most of my changes will go unnoticed in normal use.
• This release will have problems with newer hardware and drivers by default, as it is a legacy OS meant for old computers, and therefore comes with an old kernel. These problems will be solved naturally with our future releases or by manually upgrading the supplied kernel on your own. Keep in mind that this is an RC release and not a final version, meaning the OS is not perfect yet, though it is close, and should be better than many final releases of other distros. The known remaining bugs should not effect usability much. Also, our 3.x repos are currently under construction, but will include lots of E17 extras and goodies for you to play with in the near future.

What is new in version 3.0.0 RC1:

• The most important new thing in this release is the addition of an ISO image that supports legacy hardware. The legacy ISO image features a 3.2 kernel that will work on 486 machines (or newer), including non-PAE hardware. This ISO image currently features the same E19 desktop that the other three discs have, but if all goes as planned the legacy disc will feature the E17 desktop by default starting with our second release candidate.

What is new in version 2.2.0:

• This release is exciting for a number of reasons. To start with, we are introducing a few new things with this update release.
• With this release, we will now be maintaining two 32bit install discs: One that is PAE enabled by default and one that is not. The kernel without PAE will be an older stable kernel (in this case 3.2) while the PAE enabled kernel will be the latest kernel - for 2.2.0 this means 3.7 kernel. Our 64bit release also comes with the 3.7 kernel.

What is new in version 1.4.0:

• The end of March is approaching and that means our first quarter update release is here! As is the case with all our update release packages are fairly fresh. Enlightenment has been built from a fresh SVN pull from March 20th and the default Midori browser has been updated to the latest release.
• A more current build of the Linux kernel is in use as well. We are using the 3.2.0-19 build from upstream Ubuntu sources this release.
• Beyond that you will find current versions of other non-default software in our repositories including Firefox 11, Chromium 17 and LibreOffice 3.5
• A new feature this LiveCD sports that previous releases lacked is the ability to boot fully into system memory (RAM). Selecting this option will take slightly long for the live environment to boot (and needs at least 512meg RAM) - but once it is fully loaded things will run much quicker than they do from the CD and you can even eject/remove the disc! Neat right?
• We also implemented a number of minor improvements to the base system. These include resolving an issue that had prevented PCManFM's application menu from working.
• E17's everything module calculator feature now works out of the box.
• Enlightenment's notification module is now enabled by default in our profiles.
• Our setup wizard got some much needed color improvements.
• and finally - as always - the default theme selection got a rotation.

What is new in version 1.3.0:

• All of our Bodhi users have been good little boys and girls this year it seems! So good in fact we are giving you your present a day early. The Bodhi team and I are happy to announce our next update release - Bodhi 1.3.0. While you will not find any earth shattering new features in this release there are many minor improvements.
• Most notably you will find the use of the new "itask" module in three of our profiles, it is far more flexible than our old taskbar module. Also worth noting is that our installer slide show has gotten a much needed make over, along with further updates to our on disc documentation and a pretty new installer icon.
• Software wise you will find a fresh Enlightenment desktop built from SVN this week and the Midori 0.4.2 web browser. In terms of themes this release features Agust, BlingBlack, PinkBodhi and Sunshine.
• You can find our high speed torrent download here or the slower direct download here. As this is just a minor release current Bodhi users can easily update their systems to these packages following the directions here (it is recommend you do a full reboot or at least X restart after these updates).
• In other Bodhi related news I have been hacking happily away at Bodhi for ARM. Beyond our Genesi partner hardware I have been working at getting file systems prepared for the Nokia N900 and the HP TouchPad running Bodhi's enlightenment desktop. These file systems will be based on Debian Wheezy (The current squeeze release lacks enough ARM support to be used).
