Ubuntu 12.10 Superemix

As its name suggests, Ubuntu 12.10 Superemix is a remix of the Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) operating system, with all the latest updates applied. It includes both the GNOME and Unity desktop environments.

Distributed as a dual-arch Live DVD

This custom Ubuntu OS is available for download as a single, dual-arch Live DVD ISO image of approximately 1GB in size, designed to support both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. Please note that you must write the ISO image to either a USB flash drive or a DVD disc in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Boot options

Being based on Ubuntu, the boot prompt of the ISO image has not been changed a bit, allowing the user to try the distribution without installing anything, start the graphical installer to permanently install the OS on a local drive, boot from the first disk, run a memory test, or check the disc for defect (only if using a DVD media).

Both Unity and GNOME graphical interfaces are included

As mentioned, the distribution comes with both GNOME (with GNOME Shell) and Unity graphical interfaces, allowing the user to switch between them directly from the login screen. Their look is unchanged, providing users with a pure GNOME/Unity desktop experience.

What’s new in this superemix of Ubuntu 12.10?

The Unity Shopping Lens has been removed, the Evolution email and calendar client has been replaced with the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, audio and video codecs have been added, as well as popular applications like Wine and GIMP.

All in all, Ubuntu 12.10 Superemix is not quite a super remix of the Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) operating system, as it only brings a couple of changes to the software selection and an extra desktop environment.
