b00x OS is an open source distribution of Linux based on the Xubuntu operating system and built around the lightweight Xfce desktop environment. It is specifically tailored for the wannabe hacker, as it features a wide range of penetration testing utilities borrowed from the Kali Linux distro.

Distributed as a 64-bit Live DVD

The distribution can be downloaded from its official website or via Softoware’s secure servers as a single Live DVD ISO image that has been designed to be installed only on 64-bit hardware platforms.

As the ISO image has approximately 3GB in size, it is a must to deploy it to either a DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 4GB or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Minimal boot prompt

Being designed to keep things simple, the distribution uses only two options on the boot prompt, the ability to start the live environment without installing anything and to permanently install the operating system on a local drive.

Hackerish desktop environment powered by Xfce

Before you can access and use the graphical session, you must login using the “root” username and the “toor” password. The desktop environment is darkish, hackerish, powered by the lightweight Xfce graphical desktop interface and comprised of a single panel located on the upper part of the screen from where you can launch applications and interact with running programs.

Includes a plethora of hacking utilities

As expected, the distro includes a wide range of hacking tools that can be used for information gathering, vulnerability analysis, password and wireless attacks, sniffing, spoofing, reverse engineering, stress testing, hardware hacking, forensics, and reporting.

Bottom line

Summing up, we have to admit that we see a lot of potential in this Linux distribution, as it keeps things simple and utilizes all the upstream Kali Linux technologies. We do hope to see more powerful releases of this operating system in the near future.
