OSGi, or the Open Service Gateway initiative, is an unofficial standard that details how developers can create modular services in Java, services made up of smaller packages that can be added and removed at runtime without restarting the entire application.
Apache Felix is basically a collection of sub-projects that help support various principles and technologies that when put together aid developers in supporting OSGi-like features for their code.
Some of the Apache Felix projects can handle application preferences, a simple shell, a Web console, UPnP device integration, components models and dependency injection, general inventory data, and much much more.
All of these put together provide a pretty useful framework for supporting the OSGi standard, and creating easier to manage Java software.
