VoiceChatter is a cross-platform and free voice communication (chat) application. It was designed with gaming in mind, but can be used for many other purposes.

Why write VoiceChatter? Because there is no voice communication application that I am aware of that has excellent voice quality, AND supports all major platforms (Linux, Windows, Mac). I am a Linux hobbiest, and I would like to play games on it. However, the the two most popular applications either do not support Linux or have inferior voice quality.

Now you can have the best voice quality available on your platform of choice.

If you wish to try out VoiceChatter without setting up your own server, you can connect to "vcserver.dyndns.org", port 8787. Just leave the username and password fields blank.

We still need help! What we need most is a mac developer, but we could also use a linux developer, C Programmer, and maybe a graphic artist. See the contribute page for details.

Features:

  • Talk with friends, family, or teammates over a fast and clear connection
  • Ability to use text chat for anyone without a microphone
  • Native client and server support for all 3 major platforms (Windows, Mac, Unix/Linux)
  • Automatic microphone volume normalization
  • Admin features including kick/ban and move clients
  • Ability to define users and groups for granting admin privileges
  • Remote admin interface, allowing 3rd party applications to admin servers while they are running
  • Recording voice conversations
  • Saved server list for easily managing any servers that you use
  • Password protected servers and channels
  • Nested channels
  • Codec quality/bandwidth usage control
  • Support for ALSA, Windows MME, DirectSound, and CoreAudio

What is new in this release:

  • The biggest change is that the Windows client configuration settings will now save properly when not running as Administrator.
  • A rare server crash has been fixed, and the database configuration module will now tolerate brief disconnects.

What is new in version 1.4.6:

  • This version comes with a new overlay plugin, which will render the clients in your channel straight into the games that you play.
  • The plugin support has been greatly expanded to support better plugins in the future.

What is new in version 1.4.5:

  • This client-side only bugfix release fixes a few recently introduced problems.
  • Most notably, a crash on exit in the Mac client was fixed, and the transmit status of new phantoms was fixed, and the audio event when a new person connects will now play.

What is new in version 1.4.4:

  • This version fixes a critical bug that could have resulted in loss of configuration if the config file became too large.

What is new in version 1.4.3:

  • a crash/failure on auto-reconnect has been fixed
  • the ability to bind to a hostname in addition to an IP address has been added

What is new in version 1.4.1:

  • Some of the elements of the right click menu for your own phantom have been properly grayed out
  • Fixed a server crash when someone tries to page their own phantom (this option is now grayed out in the client as well)
  • Fixed the ability to click on URLs in the chat window

What is new in version 1.4.0:

  • Fixed an issue where clients would be immediately switched back to the idle channel after leaving it
  • Fixed the option to make text chat be spoken by text-to-speech
  • You can now create a phantom in the channel that you're currently in
  • Closing phantoms very quickly will now properly...well...close the phantoms
