requestAnimationFrame is a W3C specification for improving animation performance in the browser. It does this by syncing up with the animation's frame rate to the browser's refresh rate.
This leads to smoother animations, while for browser tabs running in the background, lesser frame rates and a lower resource consumption.
As good and useful as this feature is, only a few browsers and only the latest versions of those browsers implement this feature.
Zoetrope acts as a polyfill, allowing developers to use requestAnimationFrame optimization in older browsers, perfect for preventing crashes in browsers that have not been created to handle the huge load of JavaScript animations found in today's Web.
