Winspee OS

Winspee OS is a free and open source distribution of Linux based on Debian GNU/Linux and designed around the minimalist Openbox window manager, which is uses as the default graphical desktop environment. It aims to be deployed on old computers and provides users with a basic and very simple interface.

Distributed as a dual-arch Live CD

For your convenience, Winspee OS is distributed as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image that fits well on a CD disc and offers support for booting the operating system on 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. The ISO image is hybrid, so we strongly recommend you to write it on a USB flash drive of 1GB or higher capacity.

Includes powerful boot options

The Live CD includes powerful boot options that allow the user to mainly start that operating system with normal configuration, in failsafe mode or with a specific kernel that supports 32-bit (i486 non-PAE and i686 PAE) instruction set architectures.

Additionally, it is possible to start the text-mode or graphical installers in export mode, access the rescue mode, as well as to perform a system memory (RAM) diagnostic test using the Memtest86+ utility.

Basic desktop environment build around Openbox

As mentioned, the Winspee OS distribution uses the minimal Openbox window manager as the default graphical desktop environment, offering a simple, easy-to-use and very basic interface that comprises of a dock (application launcher) located on the bottom edge of the screen. The dock not only allows you to launch your favorite apps, but it gives you quick access to the main menu and the system tray area.

Comes pre-loaded with a minimal set of apps

A minimal set of open-source applications is included in Winspee OS. Among some of the most important programs, we can mention the NetSurf web browser, XChat IRC client, AbiWord word processor, Leafpad text editor, PCManFM file manager, BleachBit system cleaner, LXTerminal, UXTerm and XTerm terminal emulators, as well as the Code::Blocks IDE and various C++/Python tools for programmers.
