WebDNA FastCGI takes full advantage of WebDNA Version 6.0 engine, a new iteration of WSC's Internet application generator. WebDNA has long been a favorite of eBusiness web developers for its ease of use, rapid learning curve, flexibility, performance, and support for multiple platforms including Mac OSX, Unix, Linux, and Solaris.
webdna.fcgi is not intended to run at server level.
The idea is to run one copy per website, each website being totally independant from the others. From a "centralization" design with the module, it goes to a "dissemination" design with the FastCGI, allowing users to run WebDNA on a website, on a VPS or a dedicated server and not depend anymore from hosting providers. Any user would be able to upgrade by just replacing the fascgi, while we could have other users with older webdna.fcgi versions on the same box. Move your website to another hosting provider and your license go with you. You just buy the license you need: if on one single box, you have a heavy loaded website and another one with low traffic, you could buy a license for the first one and run the other as freeware.
It also runs very well with fast webservers with small footprint like lighttpd.
WebDNA 7.0 is released as freeware, without any restriction. You can enjoy all WebDNA capabilities for free.
However, we can provide an "accelerator license" for each copy: what we name an "accelerator license" is a "certificate". An accelerator certificate will work for a single domain and all the associated subdomains: you just need one single accelerator certificate for "domain.com", "www.domain.com", "sub.domain.com" or "sub.sub.domain.com", even if those domains and subdomains reside on several physical servers. The certificate is also platform-independant. The certificate encrypts the domain name and therefore can only run for a single domain name. We could compare this with a SSL certificate without expiration date.
Though there is no need for an accelerator certificate (WebDNA 7.0 will run in "freeware" mode without certificate) it will allow WebDNA 7.0 to handle simultaneous connections faster and is therefore recommended for webservers with medium to heavy traffic.
Locally (127.0.0.1 or localhost), WebDNA 7.0 will always run in accelerated mode, making it ideal for the developer.
