Usermin is an open source and freely distributed web-based interface that can be used by any regular user to modify various functionality of a UNIX/Linux system. It other words, it allows non-root users to easily perform basic system administration tasks. It is a more simplified version of the Webmin software, specifically designed to be used by Linux users without root privileges, rather than experienced system administrators.

Features at a glance

With Usermin, non-root users or users with “limited” privileges will be able to set up Procmail configurations for email forwarding, configure autoresponders for an email server, as well as spam filtering, view and manage data in PostgreSQL and MySQL databases, edit Apache .htaccess configuration files, interact with fetchmail, add email filters, change passwords or execute various commands on the respective Linux server machine.

Additionally, it can be used to change the language and the theme used by the software when the user is logged in, change various information about your UNIX username, such as real name, phone number, office or shell, execute various commands that are predefined in Webmin and have been configured to run from Usermin, connect to a different web server, edit and create one-off At jobs, as well as to encrypt and decrypt files with GnuPG.

A modular software that runs on the cloud

Following on the steps of its bigger and more powerful brother, Usermin is a modular software. There are several modules available for installation from the project’s homepage, if one of them is installed, then non-root users will be able to perform a certain task that the respective module allows them to.

Being designed from the ground up as a web-based applications, the software runs on the cloud, which means that your customers or non-root employees will be able access it from virtually anywhere, anytime.
