Ubuntu Photo (formerly Ubuntu Classic Remix) is an open source Linux distribution based on the current LTS (Long Term Support) release of the Ubuntu 12.04 (Precise Pangolin) operating system. It has been designed entirely for amateur and enthusiast photographers, helping them to manipulate photos in any way possible, using state-of-the-art open source image editing applications.

Distributed as 64-bit/32-bit Live DVDs

The OS is distributed as Live DVD ISO images, supporting both the 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. While the boot menu is very basic, it allows users to boot the live environment with default settings or in safe graphics mode, install the operating system, test the RAM (system memory), and boot the operating system that is currently installed.

Built around the GNOME Fallback/GNOME Classic session

Ubuntu Photo is built around the GNOME Fallback/GNOME Classic session of the controversial desktop environment. A handpicked collection of applications geared toward digital photography are installed by default.

Default image manipulation applications

Default image manipulation applications include the powerful GIMP image editor with the resynthesizer plug-in, the Python layer effects plug-in and the G'MIC plug-ins, Darktable, Hugin Panorama Creator, Hugin Batch Processor, Hugin Calibrate Lens, Shotwell, and Eye of GNOME.

Contains a vast amount of open source applications

Among other applications, we can mention the Mozilla Firefox web browser, the Mozilla Thunderbird email client, Pinta, the entire LibreOffice office suite (Draw, Write, Impress, Calc), Evince document viewer, Audacity audio editor, Banshee media player, Brasero disc burner, DVDStyler, OpenShot video editor, Ripper X, Totem video player, WinFF, and xine.

Synaptic Package Manager is also installed

Synaptic Package Manager is also installed by default, allowing users to install, update and remove packages from your system. However, many other useful utilities are installed in the Ubuntu Photo Linux operating system, so its best to just download it and try it yourself.

Bottom line

All in all, we strongly recommend this photography oriented Live CD Linux distribution to all amateur and enthusiast photographers. You will not regret it one bit!
