tuxtrans

tuxtrans is an open source operating system based on the world’s most popular free distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, more specifically the Ubuntu flavor that uses the lightweight Xfce desktop environment, also known as Xubuntu. It follows on the steps of the PCLOSTrans Linux distro.

Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs

This Linux distribution is freely available for download. You can get it from Softoware or its official website (see link above) as two Live DVD ISO images or approximately 2.5GB in size each, one for each of the supported hardware platforms (32-bit and 64-bit).

Boot options

Being based on Ubuntu Linux, the system features a standard boot menu that allows the user to try the operating system without installing anything, directly start the installer, boot an existing OS from the first disk, check the integrity of the disc (only if using a DVD media), as well as to perform a RAM check.

Fast and traditional desktop environment powered by Xfce

The default and only desktop environment of the tuxtrans OS is Xfce, just like the one used in the upstream Xubuntu operating system. It uses a top panel for quick and easy access to installed applications, as well as simple interaction with running programs.

A great selection of open source applications

Default applications include the Bluefish HTML editor, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, LibreOffice office suite, VLC Media Player, as well as a wide range of translation management, machine translation, translation memory, software localization, text analysis and corpus tools.

Summing up, tuxtrans is a decent Ubuntu-based operating system specifically designed for translators, allowing them to do their job more efficiently and in a shortest time as possible. This version will be supported for 5 years, until April 2019.
