SparkyLinux Trinity

SparkyLinux Trinity is an open source distribution of Linux, a special edition of the well known SparkyLinux operating system that uses Trinity as its default and only desktop environment, a clone of the old-style KDE 3 desktop environment.

Available as Live DVDs that support 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms

The Trinity edition of SparkyLinux is available for download as two Live DVD ISO images, one for each of the supported hardware platforms (32-bit and 64-bit). It must be deployed on either a DVD disc or USB flash drive of 2GB or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Boot options

The minimal boot menu of the SparkyLinux Trinity distro includes the ability to start the live environment with default drivers or in failsafe mode, perform a system memory (RAM) diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive.

Classic KDE desktop environment with top-notch apps

As mentioned, the main purpose of this custom SparkyLinux flavor is to promote the KDE 3 look-a-like desktop environment called Trinity. It includes a wide range of top-notch open source applications, among which we can mention the GIMP image editor, Iceweasel web browser, Wicd network manager, Avidemux video editor, VLC Media Player and UNetbootin.

Among the KDE-specific applications, we can mention Akregator feed reader, KMail email client, Amarok audio player, KWord word processor, K3b CD/DVD/BD burning software, KTorrent torrent downloader, as well as the KGet download manager.

Bottom line

Overall, SparkyLinux Trinity is specifically engineered to be used on low-end computers, while still providing a beautiful and attractive user interface that is pretty much similar to the Windows XP desktop.

What is new in this release:

• SparkyLinux 2.0 RC Trinity is based on Debian ‘stable' branch ‘Wheezy', that's why has gotten number 2. It runs on Linux kernel 3.2, but added backports repository will let you install a newer kernel. All packages have been updated from Debian and Trinity repositories as of 2013-11-30. The Trinity environment and all its components are in version 3.5.13.2.
