Elephant OS is an open source distribution of Linux derived from the openSUSE operating system, built with the SUSE Studio tool and geared towards developers and system administrators.

Supports only 64-bit hardware platforms

The Elephant OS operating system is distributed as a Live DVD ISO image that contains only software packages optimized for computers supporting the 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures.

Boot menu à la openSUSE Linux

While the distribution is derived from Debian, the Live DVD’s boot menu is similar with the one used on openSUSE Linux-based operating systems. It will allow you to install a new system or restore an existing one, boot an existing OS from the local drive, as well as to install or restore Elephant OS in failsafe mode.

Simple, traditional and easy to use graphical desktop environment

The graphical session is built around the GNOME Classic desktop environment, which uses a dark theme and a taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can launch applications or interact with running programs.

Includes a vast amount of server/development-oriented applications

Being designed to be used by developers, this distributon includes a vast amount of server/development-oriented applications, such as a LAMP server, Apache, chkrootkit, CLISP, Eclipse, FileZilla, Finger, FTP, GCC, Gedit, GIMP, Git, JEdit, Mono, mtools, MySQL, Netcat, NMap, PHP5, Samba, Wget and NTP.

In addition, the Mozilla Firefox web browser, NetworkManager network connection manager, Lisp programming language, Pidgin IM client, Tomboy note-taking app, Vim advanced text editor, Zenmap network scanner, Wine and Zypper package manager are also included.
