SparkyLinux Openbox is a free and open source edition of the Debian-based SparkyLinux operating system. It is distributed as part of the SparkyLinux Base edition, built around the minimalist and low-on-resources Openbox window manager, and designed for computers with old or semi-old hardware components.

Distributed as 64-bit/32-bit Live CDs

The Openbox edition of SparkyLinux is distributed as Live CD ISO images that contains software packages optimized for either of the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures. The user must write the ISO images on blank CD discs or USB thumb drives or 1GB or higher capacity in order to boot the Live CDs from the BIOS of a computer.

Offers standard boot options

The Live CD boot options are pretty standard on the Openbox edition of SparkyLinux, designed to allow the user to start the live system with normal configuration of in failsafe mode, run a memory test, as well as to boot an existing operating system that is currently installed on the first disk drive detected by the BIOS.

Openbox is in charge of the desktop environment

As its name suggests, SparkyLinux Openbox uses the Openbox window manager as its default and only desktop environment. Its layout comprises of a panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, which helps users to interact better with running programs, as well as to access important system functions.

Default applications

The SparkyLinux Openbox operating system includes the same amount of software packages like the SparkyLinux JWM edition, which means that Iceweasel is the default web browser, PCManFM is the default file manager and Leafpad can be used to write text documents. In addition, you can chat on IRC using XChat, partition disk drives with GParted, as well as to install new packages or updated existing ones using Synaptic Package Manager or Aptitude.
