SLAMPP Lite

As its name suggests, SLAMPP Lite is a lite version of the SLAMPP Live CD Linux operating system that provides a minimal home server system which runs entirely from a CD disc or USB drive. It is created with the Linux Live scripts and built around the lightweight Xfce graphical desktop environment.

It’s distributed as a dual-arch, minimal Live CD

The Lite edition of SLAMPP can be downloaded from Softoware or via the project’s official homepage as a minimal Live CD ISO image that has approximately 250 MB in size. It boots on computers supporting either of the 32-bit or 64-bit instruction set architecture and fits on a CD disc or a USB thumb drive.

Very minimal Live CD boot menu

The Live CD boot menu is very minimal and comes with no usable option. The user must press the Enter key on his or her keyboard to start the live system with the default kernel or press the F1 key to access a help screen with detailed information about possible boot options.

Run it in text-mode or with the Xfce desktop environment

By default, you will be dropped to a shell prompt where you’ll have to login using the “root” username and the “slampp” password. From here, you can run the operating system in text-mode or start the Xfce desktop environment by executing the “startx” command at the boot prompt. Xfce uses a two-panel layout.

Pre-installed software packages

Being designed from the ground up to be as minimal and low on resources as possible, the Lite edition of SLAMPP Linux comes with a handful of software packages. Among the most important ones, we can mention the XAMPP Apache, MySQL, PHP and Perl distribution, BIND DNS server, DHCP server, Dovecot and Sendmail email server, SSH (Secure Shell) server, Bluefish HTML editor, Firestarter firewall, ClamAV antivirus and Sylpheed email client.

What is new in this release:

• Updated and upgraded existing applications included in previous SLAMPPLite Live CD
• Powered by XAMPP 1.5.1 and now it exists as module (xampp_1_5_1.mo)
• Based on Slackware current
• Used linux kernel 2.6.16
• Compiled with Linux Live scripts 5.4.1
• Added NASLite File Servers applications of Server Elements for SMB, FTP and NFS. They can be found under /tools directory of CD.
• Added Abiword 2.4.1
• Added Freerock GNOME support via slapt-get
• New hard disk installation program provided by Nonux
• Web documents installation scripts is now separated from XAMPP boot scripts. You can execute it from Xfce menu, or manually: # bash /opt/slampp/install.sh
