SID/awm

SID/awm is an open source operating system built around the awesome window manager and based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system. It tries to be a distribution of Linux suitable for low-end machines and computers with old hardware components.

Distributed as a dual-arch Live DVDs

You can download this Debian-based operating system from its official homepage or via Softoware as a single, dual-arch Live DVD ISO image that will support both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (amd64) hardware platforms.

Boot options

The astonishing boot menu will allow you to start the live environment with default options, in text-mode, with the “no modeset” option, with the “no probe” option, or by copying the DVD’s contents to RAM. In addition, it is possible to boot another Linux OS with UnionFS, run a memory test, boot another operating system from the first disk, or access a help screen.

Minimal and beautiful graphical session powered by awesome

The system includes all of the amazing copycat-killer themes for the awesome window manager, the awesome freedesktop auto-menu, the smxi scripts, the inxi system information script, the ncmpcpp MPD client. Keep in mind though, that you must first log into the system with the live/live or root/root username/password combinations.

A great collection of open source applications

Beside some interesting command-line tools, the distribution includes various graphical applications, among which we can mention the Geany IDE, Iceweasel web browser, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, Thunar file manager, BleachBit system cleaner and Synaptic Package Manager.

In conclusion, SID/awm is one of those lightweight distributions of Linux that will turn any computer, especially old ones, into powerful workstations. It uses the awesome window manager and some of the best open source applications on top of the latest upstream Debian GNU/Linux Sid technologies.
