PUPITUP is yet another Puppy Linux-based operating system oriented towards musicians who are looking for a portable music lab built around open-source software projects. It is fully compatible with netbook computers or machines with small screens, including Acer Aspire One and ASUS Eee PC.
It’s distributed as a dual-arch Live CD
At the moment, the distro is available for download on Softoware as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image that can be used on modern computers supporting the 64-bit architecture or on old 32-bit machine. The project was successfully tested on an Acer Aspire One netbook with 1.5GB of RAM and an 120GB HDD, while PUPITUP was running completely from a USB stick.
Offers advanced boot options on the Live CD
While the ISO image has been engineered to automatically start the live system in ten seconds from the moment the user boots it from the BIOS of a computer, it offers advanced boot options that will help you to use the operating system on certain hardware.
Traditional desktop environment built around IceWM
Before you can access the graphical session, you must choose a mouse type, a keyboard layout and a display server. The desktop environment is built around the traditional IceWM window manager, which uses a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen.
Comes pre-loaded with music-related apps
As expected, the PUPITUP distro comes pre-loaded with music-related apps. Among the most important ones, we can mention the Audacity audio editor, LMMS multimedia studio, Qsynth MIDI sequencer, TkSolfege ear training program, as well as MuseScore music composition and notation software.
It is no longer under active development
Like many other distributions of Linux, PUPITUP did not survived the time past. Since 2009, the project is no longer under active development, which means that the pre-installed packages are very old and will no longer receive software updates or security patches. It an unsafe operating system that has been archived for historical references purposes only.
