As its name suggests, OpenXange Server is a server-oriented operating system, a special edition of the OpenXange Linux distribution designed for system administrators who want to transform regular computers into dedicated servers in a shortest time as possible. It features the KDE Plasma desktop environment.
Supports only 64-bit (x86_64) computers
The Server edition of OpenXange can be downloaded from the distribution’s homepage or via Softoware (see download link above) as a Live DVD ISO image that runs only on computers that support the 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architecture.
The system is bootable from DVD or USB media
The ISO image has approximately 1GB in size and it’s hybrid, which means that you can burn it onto a DVD disc using any CD/DVD burning software on GNU/Linux, Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows OSes, or write it on a USB thumb drive of 1GB or higher capacity using the UNetbootin application.
The Live DVD will boot the system automatically
You won’t have to worry about boot options when using the OpenXange Server Live DVD, as it will boot the live system automatically in ten seconds. However, the boot menu can be revealed by pressing any key on your keyboard during the 10-second timeout, allowing you to boot the OS in safe graphics mode, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive, as well as to verify the integrity of the bootable medium (only if using a CD media) and boot the system.
It is no longer under active development
Despite the fact that the OpenXange operating system is still in active development and receives regular updates, the Server edition has been discontinued two years ago and will no longer receive software updates or security patches.
Do not use it on production machines
Because of this, we strongly advise our users to not download and install the OpenXange Server Linux distribution on production machines. It has been archived for historical purposes only.
