LinuxKidX is an open source and freely distributed Linux kernel-based operating system that includes software packages designed for children from 2 to 15 years old. The distribution is derived from the highly acclaimed Slackware Linux OS and built around the KDE3 graphical desktop environment.
Distributed as a dual-arch Live CD
The distribution can be downloaded via Softoware or directly from the project’s website as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image that has been successfully tested on computers supporting either of the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures. Default language is Portuguese, but Softoware offers only the English version of the LinuxKidX operating system.
Minimal Live CD boot menu
Being designed with usability in mind, the Live CD will automatically start the live system in five seconds from the moment the user boots the ISO image from the BIOS of a computer using either a CD disc or a USB thumb drive. There are only two options on the Live CD boot menu, the ability to start the live system with normal configuration or run a memory test.
Beautiful, traditional and familiar graphical session
As mentioned, LinuxKidX is built around the KDE3 desktop environment, providing a beautiful, traditional and familiar graphical session that is designed especially for kids. It comprises of a single taskbar located on the bottom edge of the screen and various application shortcuts on the desktop.
Comes pre-loaded with a vast amount of educational apps
LinuxKidX comes pre-loaded with vast amount of educational apps, most of them being designed to run under the KDE desktop environment. Among some of the most important ones, we can mention KStars virtual planetarium, Kalzium periodic table of elements, KTouch typing tutor, KGeography geography software, KWordQuiz general purpose flash card program, as well as ChildsPlay, a collection of small, cute games.
