openSUSE Edu Li-f-e GNOME Classic

openSUSE Edu Li-f-e GNOME Classic is a freely distributed and open source operating system based on the openSUSE Linux distribution and built around the GNOME Classic graphical desktop environment. It is a special edition of the openSUSE Edu Li-f-e educational OS developed by the openSUSE-Education team.

Available as a Live DVD for the 64-bit platform

The operating system is available for download as a single Live DVD ISO image that has been designed from the ground up to be deployed only on 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms. It must be burned onto a DVD disc or written to a USB thumb drive of 2GB or higher capacity in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Its boot loader is identical with the ones found on the KDE and MATE editions of openSUSE Edu Li-f-e, allowing the user to start the live environment with default options, boot an existing operating system from the first disk, perform a memory diagnostic test, as well as to install the distribution without testing it, which is something that we don't recommend.

Classic GNOME interface for 'classy' students

As mentioned, this is a special edition of the openSUSE Edu Li-f-e operating system that uses GNOME Classic as its default desktop environment, providing users with a traditional interface that uses a two-panel layout and modern main menu.

Among the preinstalled educational apps, we can mention SciTE text editor, RStudio R IDE (Integrated Development Environment), gElemental periodic table viewer, Scilab numerical computational package, SciNotes integrated text editor for Scilab, Xcos hybrid dynamical systems model designer, Inkscape vector graphics editor, Synfig Studio 2D animation software, LibreOffice office suite, and Geany IDE.

Bottom line

In conclusion, we have to admit that the GNOME Classic version of the openSUSE Edu Li-f-e Linux distribution beats the MATE edition in terms of traditionality. It is without no doubt the perfect operating system for classroom use!
