Linutop OS is a commercial Linux kernel-based operating system derived from the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu, built around the Xfce desktop environment and designed to be used as a Kiosk OS on a regular computer.
Comes as a DEMO Live CD that supports mainstream architectures
Linutop OS is not a free operating system, despite the fact that it is based on open-source technologies, such as Ubuntu and Xfce. It supports most of the PCs and mainstream architectures (32-bit and 64-bit). You can write the ISO image to either a CD disc or a USB thumb drive. It cannot be installed on a local drive
The operating system is designed as a Live CD that cannot be installed on a local drive. This means that, from the bootloader, you can start the live system with default boot options by pressing the Enter key on your keyboard or boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive detected by the BIOS.Features a traditional and familiar graphical desktop environment
Being built around the Xfce desktop, Linutop OS is designed in such a way that it features a traditional and familiar graphical environment. It comprises of a single panel located on the bottom edge of the screen, offering lightweight open source applications and utilities.Default applications include the Mozilla Firefox web browser, GNU Paint digital painting software, Mirage image viewer, VLC Media Player, Thunar file manager, Leafpad text editor and Synaptic Package Manager.
Not the only Kiosk OS available on the market
Linutop OS developers promise an operating system that is energy efficient and maintenance free, suitable for secure Internet access, digital signage and telecom. However, the truth is that it is not the only Kiosk OS available on the market, and because of the fact that it’s commercial, we recommend our users to try the Instant WebKiosk/EDS, Instant WebKiosk/UB or Porteus Kiosk Edition operating systems.
