KOceanSaver is an open source and freely distributed software project designed especially for the KDE Plasma graphical desktop environment. It is an underwater screensaver that presents a superb glimpse of the Ocean fauna.

The screensave is engineered in such a way that it can display an Ocean full of sea creatures. In particular, you will notice swimming sharks and barracudas. In addition, there’s a treasure chest at the bottom of the Sea, as well as a shipwreck in the background.

Designed for KDE

As its name might suggest to KDE fans, the program has been designed to be used only on the KDE desktop environment, as it requires the KScreenSaver package to work. Of course, this means that it is not compatible with other open source desktops, such as GNOME or Xfce.

On the other hand, the software can be installed on any 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x86_64) distribution of Linux, as long as the KDE desktop environment is installed and it is set as your default graphical session.

Getting started with KOceanSaver

To deploy the KOceanSaver screensaver on a GNU/Linux distribution that runs at least version 4 of the KDE desktop environment, you must download the latest version from Softoware, save the archive on your desktop or Home directory and extract its contents using an archive manager utility.

Open the Terminal app (Konsole in KDE), use the ‘cd’ command to navigate to the location of the extracted archive files (e.g. cd /home/softoware/Desktop/KOceanSaver), run the ‘cmake .’ command to configure the program, assuming that you have the CMake package installed, and then run the ‘make’ command to compile it.

After a successful compilation, install KOceanSaver by running the ‘make install’ command as root or the ‘sudo make install’ command as a privileged user. Open the Control Center (System Settings) panel on your KDE desktop and go to the screensaver section to activate KOceanSaver.
