Groovesquid is exactly what the name implies, an software squid that puts its tentacles over the Grooveshark web-based music streaming service, downloading songs requested by users through a graphical user interface implemented in Java for all mainstream operating systems (Linux, Mac and Windows).

In other words, with Groovesquid you will be able to download any song from Groovesquid, easy, painless and free. And the best of all is that the application is open source, yet ad-supported.

Intuitive GUI lets users download songs from Grooveshark quickly

When opening the program, you will notice that its GUI (Graphical User Interface) is very easy to use and quite intuitive. All you have to do is to search for a song, album or artist, select the file of files you want to download, and then click the “Download” button.

All files will be downloaded in separate folders, based on the name of the artist and the album’s name, under your Home directory. Songs are saved automatically in the MP3 audio file format, and can be easily played from within the app.

Failed downloads can be retried as many times as you want, successfully downloaded songs can be removed from the disk, and you can change the target directory, enable search autocomplete, change the filename scheme, and set the maximum number of parallel downloads from the Settings dialog.

Getting started with Groovesquid

To use the Groovesquid application on a GNU/Linux operating system, you must first download the pre-built binary package from Softoware, where it is distributed as a JAR file. Save the file on your Home directory or directly on the desktop, double-click it and use the program as explained in the section above.

Being an open source software, Groovesquid is also available for download as a source package, allowing skilled developers and hackers to modify it, add new functions, and optimize it for a specific hardware architecture and/or operating system. At the moment, the app has been successfully tested on computers supporting either of the 64-bit or 32-bit architectures.
