GNOME LiveCD is an open source operating system based on the latest version of the acclaimed Fedora Linux distribution and built around the modern GNOME desktop environment. It has been designed to provide users with a preview of the latest GNOME technologies.
Distributed as dual-arch Live DVD
The project is distributed as a single Live DVD ISO image that supports both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware architectures. It can be deployed to either a USB flash drive or a blank or RW DVD disc.
It boots quite fast and will immediately enter the desktop environment, powered by the latest release of GNOME. As usual, the session features a single panel located on the upper part of the screen, allowing users to access the activities area, calendar and clock, as well as the system tray panel.
Default applications
Default applications include the Nautilus (Files) file manager, Epiphany web browser, Empathy multi-protocol instant messenger, Rhythmbox music player, Evolution email and calendar client, Gedit text editor, Totem (Videos) video player, Transmission torrent downloader, as well as Shotwell image viewer and organizer.
In addition, it includes the Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Cheese webcam viewer, Simple Scan scanning tool, GNOME Calculator, Deja Dup backup tool, GNOME Screenshot, Remote Desktop Client (Vinagre), and GNOME Dictionary.
Among other default GNOME applications, we can mention Photos, Maps, Weather, Documents, Contacts, Logs, Music, Notes (Bijiben), Clocks, Character Map, File Roller, Evince, Font Viewer, System Monitor, Image Viewer, Tweak Tool, Baobab, Boxes, Disks, Terminal, Seahorse, and Software.
Bottom line
Unfortunately, there no built-in support to install it on a local disk drive. It acts only as a live preview of the latest stable release of the controversial GNOME desktop environment. Furthermore, the live medium has a basic boot prompt and no boot menu.
Overall, GNOME LiveCD is a decent project that allows us to preview the applications and technologies implemented by the GNOME developers in the latest stable release of the highly acclaimed open source desktop environment.
