Entropy GNU/Linux (formerly Less Systemd GNU/Linux KDE Edition) is an open source distribution of Linux, a special edition of the independent Less Systemd GNU/Linux operating system built around the KDE desktop environment.

Available for download as 32-bit and 64-bit Live CDs

The distribution can be downloaded directly from its official homepage (see the homepage link at the end of the article) or via Softoware as Live CD ISO images designed to support the i686 (32-bit) and amd64 (64-bit) CPU architectures.

The operating system will run well on either 32-bit (i686) or 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms and must be written on a CD disc or a USB flash drive in order to boot it from the BIOS of a computer.

Boot options

From the boot loader of the Live CD, the user can start the operating system in live or interactive modes, in safe graphics mode (failsafe) or by copying the contents of the ISO image to RAM (system memory).

In addition, it is possible to start the installer directly, repair a broken installation, boot an existing operating system from the first or second disk drive, as well as to shutdown or reboot the machine.

Pure and clean KDE Plasma graphical desktop environment

As mentioned, the main emphasis of this operating system is on the KDE Plasma desktop environment, which uses a single-panel layout and provides users with a clean and familiar graphical interface.

Includes only KDE-specific applications

The distro includes only KDE-specific applications, among which we can mention the KWrite and Kate text editors, Konqueror web browser, Dolphin file manager, and Klipper clipboard manager.

Bottom line

In conclusion, Entropy GNU/Linux proves to good operating system that features a BSD-style system initialization, a package manager, a custom Linux kernel, and a rolling-release model. However, we do not recommend it for production use!

What is new in this release:

  • Entropy switched to vanilla kernel v3.18.10, Source Package Manager now supports PGP signatures verification as well as signing files (such as pre-build software tarballs), improved overall Source Package Manager performance, new graphical installer and finally the usual software updates.

What is new in version 20150106:

  • KDE has been replaced with Katana.

What is new in version 20141025:

  • The KDE PIM applications (KMail, Kontact, etc.) have been fixed by adding missing requirement - kdepim-runtime.
  • In addition a few minor updates have been made.

What is new in version 20141020:

  • The kernel in use is trimmed custom/forked Linux kernel with drivers
  • for exotic platforms.
  • Various features removed for better boot and overall performance.
