CrunchBang Linux Backported is a special edition of the CrunchBang Linux distribution, which is based on the Debian GNU/Linux operating system and includes only recompiled packages from the testing and unstable branch of Debian.

Distributed as Live CDs optimized for 32-bit and 64-bit architectures

The CrunchBang Linux Backported distribution is currently distributed as two Live CD ISO images, one for i686 and i486 (32-bit) hardware platforms and another one for 64-bit (x86_64) architectures.

The boot menu is identical with the of CrunchBang Linux

Technically, this is still CrunchBang Linux, therefore, when booting the ISO image from the BIOS of a PC, you will encounter a boot menu that allows you to start the live session with default kernel parameters or in failsafe mode, install the operating system on your computer using the graphical or text-mode installers, as well as to perform a system memory (RAM) diagnostic test.

The graphical session is lightweight, powered by Openbox

CrunchBang is a distribution of Linux that boots very fast on any computer, mostly because it includes highly optimized Debian packages and a ligthweight graphical desktop environment built around the Openbox widow manager.

Contains mostly recompiled software packages from the Debian testing branch

As mentioned, the Backported edition of CrunchBang Linux includes mostly recompiled software packages from the Debian Testing software repositories, as well as some packages from the Debian Unstable branch.

Among the pre-installed applications, we can mention the Transmission BitTorrent client, GIMP image editor, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, Viewnior image viewer, Thunar file manager, Geany IDE, VLC Media Player, gFTP file transfer client, Iceweasel web browser, XChat IRC client, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor and AbiWord word processor.

It's no longer under active development

In addition, it allows the user to install various other popular applications, such as LibreOffice, Chromium, Google Chrome and Opera with a single click of a mouse. Unfortunately, this version is no longer under active development and has been archived for historical purposes only!

What is new in this release:

  • Much improved boot performance with faster start-up times.
  • Improved support for wireless cards.
  • Ext4 filesystem support.
  • The lightweight tint2 panel/taskbar replaces lxpanel.
  • Transmission BitTorrent client replaces Deluge.
  • A full Vim installation included by default.
  • Pyroom fullscreen editor included by default.
  • Many other minor tweaks and fixes including:
  • Improved documentation added to default configuration files.
  • Openbox menu items added for commonly used configuration files.
  • New and improved default Openbox and GTK themes.
  • Additional Openbox and GTK+ themes installed, including the popular Dyne themes.
