Canaima GNU/Linux is an open source desktop operating system created for the Venezuelan Linux community. It is based on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution and uses the GNOME desktop environment.
The Canaima project provides users with a distribution of Linux primarily designed as a computing solution for the National Public Administration of Venezuela, in accordance with the presidential decree number 3.390 regarding the use of open source software.
Distributed as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs
It’s distributed as two Live DVD ISO images, one for each of the supported architectures (32-bit and 64-bit). They can be deployed on either USB flash drives or blank CD discs. The main language is Spanish.
Booting from the Live DVD will be an automatic process, but users can press any key during the five second prompt to access the boot menu, which allows them to choose another language for the live environment.
It is also possible to start an existing operating system installed on the first disk drive, as well as to boot the live session in failsafe mode, in case the first option does not recognize your graphics card.
GNOME is in charge of the graphical environment
GNOME is in charge of the entire graphical environment of the Canaima distribution, comprised of two panels. While the top panel is used for accessing the main menu, system tray area and calendar, the bottom one helps users to interact with running apps and switch between virtual workspaces.
Default applications
Default applications include the GNU Paint small-scale painting program, Cunaguaro web browser, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and GMail clients, Guacharo email and news client, and Empathy multi-protocol instant messenger.
The distribution also comes with the Rhythmbox music player, Totem video player, LibreOffice office suite, Brasero CD/DVD burning software, Orca screen reader and magnifier, Evince document viewer, GNOME Disk Utility, and many other useful tools.

Canaima GNU/Linux is an open socio-technological project built collaboratively. It provides users with free software and a Debian-based operating systems specifically designed for the Venezuelan nation.

- For this occasion we include the kernel 3.11 it will be a small revolution which incorporates a set of new with many technologies, correction of faults, new optimizations and implementations, which also already includes a number of important updates for architectures, such as arc , ARM, mips, parisc, PowerPC, s390, SPARC and x86, several updates for Radeon and Intel i915 cards, some corrections to the file system Btrfs and EXT4 and improvements to the sounds.
