CaminhosOS

CaminhosOS is a freely distributed and open source operating system based on the highly acclaimed Lubuntu Linux distribution. It has been designed from the ground up to run entirely in RAM (system memory).

Availability and boot options

It is a beautifully crafted distribution of Linux that can be downloaded only as a Live CD ISO image for 64-bit (x86_64) architectures. It can be written to a USB flash drive or burned to a blank DVD disc.

The boot medium uses a custom background image for the boot prompt, but offers the same options as the ones found on other Ubuntu-based OSes. For example, you will be able to try the distro without installing it, run a memory diagnostic test, start an existing OS, or install the system without testing it (not recommended).

Astonishing LXDE desktop and a great selection of apps

As mentioned, the distro uses the LXDE (Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment) as its graphical session, which has been highly customized with panel transparency, a beautiful icon theme and drop dead gorgeous wallpapers to look amazing and attract new Linux users.

It offers a single taskbar located at the bottom edge of the screen, from where users can access the main menu, switch between virtual workspaces, and launch programs or interact with running applications.

Default applications include the PCManFM file manager, Leafpad text editor, LXTerminal terminal emulator, mtPaint graphics editor, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Sylpheed email client, Transmission torrent downloader, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, AbiWord word processor, GNOME MPlayer video player, Audacious audio player, guvbview webcam viewer, and Xfburn CD/DVD burning software.

Bottom line

Summing up, CaminhosOS is a really great, stable and beautiful Linux distribution that can easily replace your existing and deprecated Windows XP operating system. Too bad that it runs only on 64-bit hardware platforms.
