Blackbuntu Community Edition

Blackbuntu Community Edition is an open source and completely free Ubuntu-based operating system designed to be used by information security professionals and security training students alike.

Supports only 64-bit hardware platforms

The distro can be downloaded as a Live DVD ISO image of approximately 3.5GB in size, designed from the ground up to run only on computers that support the 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architecture. The ISO image can be written on a DVD disc or a USB flash drive of 4GB or higher capacity.

There are advanced options on the boot menu

While the boot menu is quite standard for an Ubuntu derivative, it allows the user to start the live system with the default kernel, in safe graphics mode, in textonly mode or in debug mode. Additionally, it lets you to perform a system memory diagnostic test, start the installer directly, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first disk detected by the BIOS.

Features a dark, hackerish graphical session

The distribution uses GNOME 2.32 a.k.a. GNOME Classic as its default and only graphical desktop environment, but with a single-panel layout. The panel is located on the upper side of the screen and allows the user to easily launch applications or interact with running programs.

Contains a vast amount of penetration testing tools

Being designed from the ground up to be used as a penetration testing operating system, Blackbuntu Community Edition contains a vast amount of pentesting tools, which have been organized in categories and subcategories under the Pentest entry of the main menu.

It is based on Ubuntu 10.10 and no longer under active development

We feel obliged to inform our users that the Blackbuntu Community Edition Linux operating system is currently based on the deprecated Ubuntu 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat) distribution and it is no longer under active development. It has been archived for historical purposes only!
