ASRI Edu Kids

ASRI Edu Kids is an open source operating system base dn the minimalistic Puppy Linux distribution and designed from the ground up to be used by kids of all ages in various educational institutions, such as schools. The default language is French.

Distributed as a dual-arch Live CD

This operating system is distributed as a dual-arch Live CD ISO image of approximately 700MB in size, which will work well on both 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i386) hardware platforms. Please keep in mind that you must write the ISO image to a DVD disc or USB flash drive in order to boot it from the BIOS of a PC.

Boot options

A comprehensive boot menu will prompt users from the get-to, allowing them to start the live environment with default boot options, in safe graphics mode or by copying the contents of the ISO image to RAM and run the live session from there, ejecting the bootable medium.

In addition, you can use the Live CD to boot an existing Microsoft Windows operating system that is installed on the first disk drive, as well as to reboot or power off the computer.

A fun and educational desktop environment

This edition of ASRI Edu features a complete desktop environment crafted for kids of all ages, who want to learn on a free and open source Linux operating system. It uses the lightweight IceWM window manager, which also poweres the Puppy Linux distro.

Educational apps, lots of educational apps

There are a dozen of educational applications and games included in this operating system, among which we can mention Blinken, PySyCache, Omnitux, Childsplay, Supertux, Gmahjongg, TuxType, Lexique, Cibler, Tuxpaint, KLetters, GCompris and Numpty.

Bottom line

Summing up, the Kids edition of ASRI Edu proved to be a fast, stable and responsive operating system suitable for a wide range of computer platforms, from low-end ones to high-end ones, and kids of all ages. However, teachers can try the ASRI Edu Profs edition of this Puppy Linux OS.
