Apache Stanbol's code is based on the OSGi component framework and it was assembled in such manner that developers will be able to build modular apps with interchangeable components.
This is possible because all of Stanbol's components can be accessed and interacted with via their own private RESTful API.
These APIs let external services interact with them, or let components talk to each other and exchange information and resources.
Stanbol is not 100% a new project, using other Apache technology like Jena, Solr, Tika, OpenNLP, Sling, Felix, or Clerezza.
