Apache Commons Exec smooths out the differences between various OS platforms and grants developers access to a Java API for executing external processes on the machine the application is running on.
While this is also possible without using the Commons Exec package, this takes up a lot of code and requires developers to address numerous platform-specific quirks and problematic areas.
The Apache Commons Exec simplifies these operations by providing a well-tested and open source utility for triggering external processes with minimal errors and much lesser code.
All major operating systems (Mac, Linux, Windows) are supported and even the more "niche" OpenVMS.
