AmayaOS is a free and open source project written from scratch and designed from the ground up to be used as a basic computer operating system for old 32-bit (i586) machines that no longer support modern OSes. It is a UNIX-like operating system that respects your freedom by using only free software projects, and can be easily installed on any x86 PC without any fear.

Distributed as a 32-bit Live CD

Currently, the AmayaOS is available for download as a minimal Live CD ISO image that has only 6 MB in size and contains only software packages optimized for the 32-bit (x86/i586) instruction set architecture. In order to boot it from the BIOS of your computer, you must write the ISO image on a mini CD, CD or DVD disc, as well as on a USB thumb drive.

Supports English, Spanish, French and Galician languages

From the Live CD boot menu, the user will be able to easily start the live system with support for the English, Spanish (default), French or Galician (Galego) languages. In addition, it is possible to start an existing operating system that is currently installed on the first disk drive detected by the BIOS.

Minimal text-mode environment

Immediately after booting the live system using any of the aforementioned boot options, you will be dropped to a minimal text-mode environment. Use the M key to access the main menu, which allows you to use the S key to enter a shell prompt, use the R key to reboot the machine, as well as to use the W key to access the WAMA text editor.

Not a Linux distribution, based on FreeNOS

AmayaOS is not a derivative of any existing Linux kernel-based operating system and it’s not a Linux distribution. Instead, AmayaOS is an operating system with independent development, based on FreeNOS (Free Niek's Operating System).
