ALT Linux Simply is an open source, free and simple GNU/Linux operating system forked from the Mandrake Linux distribution and designed from the ground up to be used on old computers, as the main system. It is built around the lightweight Xfce desktop environment and tailored for educational purposes.
Distributed as Live and Install DVDs
The Simply edition of ALT Linux is distributed as both Live DVD and Install DVD ISO images, supporting the 64-bit (x86_64) and 32-bit (i586) instruction set architectures. While the Live DVDs can be used directly from the bootable medium (DVD or USB), the installable-only DVDs are designed only for local installations of the distribution.
Simple boot menu
The Live DVD boot menu has a simple design, allowing the user to start the live system with default settings, boot an existing operating system that is installed on the first disk drive detected by the BIOS, as well as to run a memory (RAM) diagnostic test. In addition, the user will be able to change the default language, video mode, the source media, and pass extra parameters to the kernel.
Uses a simple Xfce desktop environment
The Xfce desktop environment implemented in the ALT Linux Simply operating system has a simple design, comprised of a single panel (taskbar) located on the bottom edge of the screen, from where the user can access the main menu, launch applications, interact with running programs, as well as to access important system functions and the system tray area.
Comes with a simple software selection
Being designed from the offset to be as simple as possible, the Simply edition of ALT Linux comes with a simple software selection. Among the most popular apps pre-installed in the distribution, we can mention the LibreOffice office suite, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, ownCloud client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, as well as Transmission torrent downloader.
