GnackTrack is a BackTrack inspired penetration testing distribution of Linux derived from the world’s most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, and built around the GNOME Classic graphical desktop environment.

Supports both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms

The GnackTrack distribution is available for download as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image of approximately 3GB in size, suitable for computers that support both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures. It fits perfectly on a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive of 4GB or higher capacity.

The Live DVD features a standard boot menu

When booting the Live DVD ISO image from the BIOS of a computer, using either a DVD disc or USB stick, you will encounter a boot menu that contains standard options, such as the ability to start the live system or the graphical installer, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive or run a memory test.

It is built around the GNOME desktop environment

The default and only desktop environment is built around GNOME Classic, which provides users with a productive and classic desktop that uses a two-panel layout.

Contains mostly penetration testing utilities

Being targeted at security professionals who want to perform penetration testing operations, the GnackTrack operating system contains mostly pentesting tools, which have been organized in five categories under the GnackTrack menu entry of the main menu.

Default applications include the Chromium web browser, Gedit text editor, FileZilla file transfer client, Wireshark and Zenmap network scanners, as well as the XChat IRC client.

It is no longer under active development

With the release of BackTrack 5, the developer of GnackTrack decided to no longer develop the operating system due to lack of time. It will no longer receive software updates and security patches, and has been archived for historical purposes only.

What is new in this release:

  • This release has been built from scratch to slim down the distro as make room for more tools.
  • The entire menu structure has been improved with now most of the installed tools accessible straight from the gnome menu!
  • The installer has been fixed, now when you install all of the theme, menus and settings will be ported across to the newly created installed user.
  • We hope you like it... http://www.GnackTrack.co.uk
  • For those who don't know of GnackTrack, it's much like backtrack, the KDE based distribution but GnackTrack is based on gnome! For all those hackers, crackers, and pentesters out there who want gnome, check this out!

What is new in version Beta 1:

  • After a little bit of work over the weekend I have now released GnackTrack beta1. I have fixed the annoying address location entry field in nautilus. I hated the way the navigation was with buttons, I like to type the directory I want to goto! I have added a list of apps to the Gnome Mene, this includes services so it's easier to start and stop them. I haven't had a huge amount of time to perform testing so if anyone is available to look into this for me I would be very appreciative.
