AEROS is a hybrid distribution of AROS (www.aros.org) and Linux (in the moment Debian 6.0 is used) available for ARM and x86 systems.

If there is enough interest we can start also an PPC branch. The audience may decide!

Why?

AROS is a wonderful OS (an opensource reimplementation of the classic Amiga OS). This means it is fast, and not only because of the small footprint it is very fast.
Many times faster than Linux with all its „lightweight“ desktops.

But why running one OS hosted on another? Doesn’t it slow down?
No! AROS hosted (here in form of AROS Broadway) uses less resources than any desktop manager for linux offering the same functionality.
So in fact it is faster. Especially on slow ARM systems AROS hosted will blow your mind.

What are the Benefits?

Benefits for AROS users of having Linux under the hood:
- more drivers (printers, scanners, NIC, Videocards and more
- you are able to run every Linux app including Wine (which enables the use of Windows (TM) apps without the need of Windows(TM))
- AROS - Developers can use Linux development tools
- AROS apps can utilize Linux tools to enhance there own functionalitiy.
- Single AROS processes can be forced to run on a single core.

Benefits for Linux users of having AROS on top Linux
- Fast desktop, maybe the fastest on LInux
- Allows you to run AROS apps and games too, most of them come from Amiga and have a low footprint. You will like how fast they are.
- Allows you to use JanusUAE - an integrated Amiga emulation... classic 68k Amiga apps can be used in coherency mode

What is new in this release:

  • Updated Linux kernel from 2.2.39 to 3.2.0 which adds support for many more modern CPU/GPU/NICs and so on.
  • Updated the Nvidia driver from v290 to 310 which supports more modern cards.

What is new in version r3:

  • AEROS has become a 4in1 OS.
  • You get AROSx86, AROSm68k(experimental),Linux and with PlayonLInux access to your Windows apps and Games
  • Instead of adding a AROS68k nightly you will get AROS Vision (the 68k distro) done by Olaf SchA¶nweiAŸ (many thanks for allowing me this)
  • It comes with tons of software working on AROS68k (the ironic part is that 68k DOSBOX is working)
  • K3B has been replaced by Xfburn (lightweight burning tool) added gparted (easy partitioning)
  • Changed Installer to a graphical one which calls gparted and allows now also to choose locales before installing
  • added gmrun (linux quicklauncher)
  • added Transmission (for downloading future releases of AEROS ; ) )
  • added Terminator as main Terminal (allows to run multiple terminal sessions in one Window)
  • added Hurrican ( use grandr (also newly added) to change resolution to 640x480)
  • updated JanusUAE from 1.1 to 1.2
  • added 2 games to ScummVM (AROS) Beneath a steel sky and Drascula
  • Added a€žreboota€œ and a€žshutdowna€œ options to quickstarter (AROS dock) (if it works depends on your mainboard.. in most cases it should)
  • Livemode checks for the highest resolution the framebuffer driver allows with your setup (Gpu+Monitor)
  • On my AresOne 2010 the lovemode goes into 1280x720@50Hz
  • In virtualbox it goes into 800x600, so it depends on HW combinations.
  • After installation to HD and installing your GPU-driver (Nividia, AMD, Intel, whatever) you will be able to change resolutions.
  • It will automatically choose the largest (ideally) resolution.
  • Also added a new AROS device called a€žremovable_mediaa€œ. Clicking on it will give you access to any attached removable media like USB-sticks, DVDa€™s and so on.
