By default, WordPress and most WordPress security plugins utilize PHP to prevent or stop attacks on the site.
The AskApache Password Protect plugin works on the server's level, utilizing some of its built-in features to detect, block and deter attackers from the site.
The plugin basically creates a firewall around the site, making attackers authenticate or give them selves away even before they get to load the WordPress-specific PHP files.
This is done by scanning the webmaster's current WP installation and teaching him how to improve security through various guides.
It can also set up a more secure password policy for the site's administrator account via HTTP Basic Authentication or HTTP Digest Authentication.
If you plan to use it, please read the provided instructions carefully. Administrators might get locked out of their accounts.
