Bitnami JRuby Stack is a free and multiplatform software project that aims to provide web developers with an easy-to-use and fast way to develop and deploy Ruby on Rails applications on a Java runtime environment.
What is JRuby?
JRuby is an open source and 100% free Java implementation of the Ruby programming language. It is also known as Ruby for the JVM. JRuby is known for its ability to provide a complete set of built-in syntax and classes for the Ruby language.
Installing Bitnami JRuby Stack
Being distributed as native installers that have been built using the BitRock InstallBuilder tool, Bitnami JRuby Stack is a cross-platform software available on all GNU/Linux distributions, as well as on the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. To install it, download the package that corresponds to your computer’s hardware architecture (supports both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms), run it and follow the on-screen instructions.
Run JRuby in the cloud
Besides installing JRuby on your personal computer, you can also run it in the cloud using Bitnami’s pre-built cloud images, which have been designed to work with the Windows Azure or Amazon EC2 cloud hosting providers.
Virtualize JRuby or use the Docker container
In addition to running JRuby in the cloud or install it on personal computers, you can deploy it on VMware ESX, ESXi or Oracle VirtualBox virtual machines, thanks to Bitnami’s virtual appliance based on the latest LTS (Long Term Support) release of the Ubuntu Linux distribution. A JRuby Docker container will also be available for download on the project’s homepage.
The Bitnami JRuby Module
Bitnami does not yet provide a LAMP, WAMP or MAMP module for the JRuby product. The Bitnami JRuby Stack product is the only tool offered by Bitnami for Ruby on Rails and Java web developers.
