KMPlayer

KMPlayer is an open source media player software for the GNU/Linux and Maemo platforms. It also includes a video player plugin for the Konqueror web browser distributed with the KDE desktop environment.

Features at a glance

The application is basically a GUI (Graphical User Interface) front-end for the MPlayer, Xine, GStreamer, VDR, and FFmpeg command-line multimedia playback applications and frameworks. It allows users to playback various video file formats, including AVI, MKV, MPEG, MP4, and others.

Additionally, the application can playback DVD-Video and Video-CD discs, as well as to play video streams directly from a TV device. Furthermore, it comes with built-in support for numerous playlist formats, such as m3u, PLS, RAM, and ASX.

Its graphical interface is extremely familiar, especially if you’ve used the SMPlayer application. One could say that are the same application, but they have nothing to do with one another, except for the fact that they are written in Qt and backed by MPlayer.

Playing video files is easy with KMPlayer

Playing video files is easy with this software, as it uses drag and drop support. You can also open files using the old-school method, directly from the main toolbar, which also includes the play, pause, stop, and reload functions.

The main configuration window can also be quickly opened from the toolbar, from where users can set up general aspects of the applications, including colors and fonts for playlists, video output driver, specific MPlayer options, as well as playback and interface functionality.

In addition, users can enable load on demand for URLs, choose a movie player to use use, specify preferred bitrate for video streaming, choose the default recorder, enable use of postprocessing filters, as well as automatic playback of VCD and DVD discs.

Bottom line

All in all, KMPlayer is a decent movie player application for the KDE desktop environment. However, because it has not been updated for two years now, we strongly suggest to use the SMPlayer software.
