Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04 is an open source and full featured distribution of Linux optimized to run on and support those Internet-centric computers called netbooks. It sports a unique, consumer-friendly user interface designed from the ground up to support small screens.

This is the first ever version of the Ubuntu Netbook Remix operating system, created by Canonical. It is a remix version of the main Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop CD, allowing users to easily and quickly get online by using their favorite applications.

Based on Ubuntu 9.04

Ubuntu Netbook Remix 9.04, dubbed Jaunty Jackalope, was the first to introduce support for netbooks with Intel Atom processors, while it borrowed some need optimizations from the Moblin project.

Canonical designed this project with a single goal in mind, to deliver Ubuntu on netbook computers in retail, by working closely with Intel and a wide range of OEMs. It was officially released on April 23, 2009, and supported with security updates and patches until October 23, 2010.

It uses a graphical environment comprised of a panel located on the upper part of the screen and used for accessing the main component of the operating system, a unique main menu that occupies the entire screen and allows users to quickly access their preferred applications.

Default applications

Default applications include the Mozilla Thunderbird email and news client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Ekiga softphone, Transmission torrent downloader, and OpenOffice.org office suite.

In addition, it comes with the Rhythmbox music player, Totem movie player, USB Disk Creator, Synaptic Package Manager for installing, updating and removing packages, as well as several board games.

It is no longer supported by Canonical

Today, the distribution is freely available for download but it will boast unsupported and old software packages, that are unsafe and buggy. In addition, one cannot update the distribution with new versions of installed applications.
