txOS (also known as text os) is a freely distributed, user-friendly and open source operating system geared towards the modern desktop user and derived from the world’s most popular distribution of Linux, Ubuntu. It includes the Wine application, in case you want to install apps and games designed for the Microsoft Windows operating systems.

Distributed as a dual-arch and hybrid Live DVD

The txOS distribution is available for download for free as a dual-arch Live DVD ISO image that has approximately 2 GB in size and contains software packages optimized for both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x86_64) instruction set architectures. Being a hybrid ISO image, you can write it on a DVD disc or a USB thumb drive of 2GB or higher capacity, which can be later used to boot the OS from the BIOS of your computer.

Standard boot options

The Live DVD boot menu offers standard boot options that can be found on a wide range of GNU/Linux distributions derived from Ubuntu. The user will be able to boot the live system with normal settings or in safe graphics mode (in case the graphics cards is not recognized by the first boot option), start the installer directly, test the RAM (system memory) for errors, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the local drive.

Features Cinnamon and GNOME Classic

When booting the live system, the user will be dropped to a login prompt. Please note that the default username for the Live DVD is “teksound” without a password (and without quotes). The Cinnamon desktop environment will load by default, but you can easily change it to GNOME Classic.

Default applications

The distro comes packed with useful and popular applications, among which we can mention the Banshee music player, Cheese webcam viewer, Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Chromium web browser, Skype VoIP client, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Mozilla Thunderbird e-mail and news client, Adobe Reader and the entire Apache OpenOffice.org office suite.
