Shackbox is an open source, out-of-the-box and totally free Live Linux distribution that provides over 150 applications for Ham radio operators, trunking software, antenna design apps, and a lot of other applications related to electronics.
Shackbox is based on the Ubuntu Linux operating system, but without the Unity user interface and all the KDE related applications. In addition the distro offers SDR support for rtl2832 devices and a GNU Radio companion plugin.
Distributed as a dual-arch Live DVD
This Linux operating system is distributed as a single Live DVD ISO image with built-in support for both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures. It can be used directly from the bootable medium, if deployed on a USB flash drive or a DVD media.
Boot options
The Live DVD comes with standard boot options, such as the ability to start the live system with normal configuration or safe graphics options, start the installer directly, perform a system memory diagnostic test, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the local disk drive.
Features the GNOME desktop environment
The distribution uses GNOME as its default and only desktop environment. The modern GNOME Shell interface is used by default on systems that support 3D graphics, otherwise, it will automatically default to the traditional GNOME Fallback (formerly GNOME Classic) interface.
A top panel will allow you to quickly access pre-installed applications, interact with running programs, cycle between virtual workspaces, as well as the access the built-in calendar and essential system functions.
Default applications
Default applications include the Mozilla Firefox web browser, Mozilla Thunderbird email and calendar client, Empathy multi-protocol instant messenger, Transmission torrrent downloader, LibreOffice office suite, as well as a wide variety of tools for Ham radio amateurs.
