Oikyo Linux is a free and open source distribution of Linux based on the world's most popular free operating system, Ubuntu, comprises of over 300 application and three powerful graphical desktop environments, GNOME, KDE and Unity.
Distributed only as 32-bit and 64-bit Live DVDs
This Ubuntu-based distribution is available for download as Live DVD ISO images of approximately 2GB in size each, designed for both 64-bit (recommended) and 32-bit computers. The user must burn the ISO images to blank DVD discs or deploy them onto USB sticks of 4GB or higher capacity, which can be used to boot the operating system from the BIOS of a PC.
Offers standard boot options
The Live DVDs feature a standard boot menu, which looks the same on both ISO images, allowing the user to start the live system with default settings or in safe graphics mode, boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive detected by the BIOS, perform a system memory test, install the distribution on your computer or check the integrity of the bootable medium (only if using a DVD media).
Choose between GNOME, KDE and Unity graphical sessions
The Unity user interface will be loaded by default when the user starts the distribution in live mode, but you can easily and quickly change the graphical session to GNOME or KDE directly from the login screen. Various visual effects are also provided by default for an eye-candy and modern desktop experience. Please note that a GNOME Classic (GNOME Fallback) session is also provided for slow computers.
State-of-the-art software
As mentioned, the distro comes with over 300 open-source applications. Among some of the most important ones, we can mention the Audacity audio editor, Blender 3D graphics renderer, Boot Repair, Chromium web browser, Deluge BitTorrent client, Darktable photo workflow software, Dragon Player video player, Empathy IM client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, FileZilla file transfer client, as well as the entire LibreOffice office suite.
Bottom line
With three of the most powerful open source desktop environments on board, Oikyo Linux is definitely dressed to impress. During our tests, it proved to be stable, reliable, easy-to-use and quite modern, designed for home users or small offices.
