mooOS

mooOS is an open source and freely distributed operating system based on the highly acclaimed and lightweight Arch Linux distribution, and built around some of the most eye-candy desktop environments, Unity/Compiz and Enlightenment.

Availability, boot options, supported architectures

This GNU/Linux distribution is available for download as Live DVD ISO images of approximately 3GB in size, which means that they can only be burned onto DVD discs or written on USB flash drives of 4GB or higher capacity. The ISOs are designed for the 32-bit (i686) and 64-bit (x86_64) hardware platforms.

The highly customized boot loader will allow the user to start the live environment with default settings, boot an existing OS from the first disk drive, run a memory (RAM) diagnostic test using the Memtest86+ utility, view detailed information about the hardware components of their computers, as well as to reboot or shutdown the machine.

A combination between Unity, Enlightenment and KDE

By default, the live session uses a Unity-like user interface, backed by Compiz, as the default desktop environment. On top of that, it uses some of the best applications from the KDE and Enlightenment desktop environments.

Default applications include Unity Tweak Tool, Dolphin file manager, Sublime text editor, Mozilla Firefox web browser, Canto Curses RSS reader, Music On Console audio player, VLC Media Player, FileZilla file transfer client, Steam for Linux, GIMP image editor, Kdenlive video editor, SimpleScreenRecorder screen capture utility, Avidemux video editor, Bitcoin client, Terminology terminal emulator, and K3b CD/DVD/BD burning software.

Bottom line

Summing up, it looks to us that mooOS has a bright future before it. It provides users with some of the best open source applications and tools that the GNU/Linux ecosystem has to offer. As the developer describes on the project's homepage, mooOS GNU/Linux is a distro of shape shifting, time travelling alien space penguins!
