Imagine-Linux is an open source distribution of Linux geared towards ease of use, based on the award winning Debian GNU/Linux operating system and built around the lightweight Xfce desktop environment.

Available for download as a 32-bit Live DVD

This custom Debian operating system can be downloaded via Softoware or directly from its official website as a Live DVD ISO image designed to support both 32-bit (i386) and 64-bit (x86_64) computers, but usable only with 32-bit applications.

Boot options

The boot prompt of the Live DVD is quite simple and well organized, allowing the user to start the live environment with default boot options and drivers or in safe graphics mode (failsafe), as well as to run a memory diagnostic test or boot an existing operating system from the first disk drive.

Superb graphical desktop environment powered by Xfce

By design, users will be dropped to a login screen where they must use the live username and the “live” password (without quotes) to log into the graphical session, which is powered by Xfce.

The desktop environment is quite innovative compared to the standard layout of the Xfce project. It uses a top panel for quick access to the main menu, and a bottom dock (application launcher).

Includes only free (libre) applications

As expected, the distribution includes a plethora of open source applications, among which we can mention the Iceweasel web browser, Pidgin multi-protocol instant messenger, Transmission torrent downloader, GIMP image editor, Totem movie player, Rhythmbox audio player, and Evolution email and calendar client.

Bottom line

In conclusion, the Imagine-Linux system is easy to install and use, similar to the Ubuntu or Linux Mint operating system, but based directly on the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. It includes applications specifically selected to be simple and easy to use for the end user.
