DonLinux is an open source operating system based on the Ubuntu Linux distribution specifically designed for people who want to recover data from damaged hard disk drive, create system backups, as well as to repair broken operating systems, boot partitions and partition tables.
Distributed as a 32-bit Live DVD
In order to support a wide range of computers, the distribution is available for download from Softoware or its official website (see link above) as a Live DVD ISO image of approximately 1GB in size, tagged for the i386 (32-bit) architecture, but designed to run on both 32-bit and 64-bit hardware platforms.
Boot options
The boot options are very basic and standard. They allow the user to start the live environment with default graphics drivers or in safe graphics mode, directly start the graphical installer, test the computer’s memory (RAM) for errors, as well as to boot an existing operating system from the first drive.
Classic desktop environment with a two-panel layout
DonLinux uses GNOME Classic (without GNOME Shell) as its default and only desktop environment, uses the EXT4 as its default file system, supports wireless connections, and offers support for the English, Castellano and Spanish languages. There’s no password on the login prompt, just press the Enter key on your keyboard to log in.
Default applications
Default applications include the Shotwell image viewer and organizer, Boot-Repair boot repair utility, Midnight Commander two-pane file manager, Remastersys Ubuntu OS builder, rkhunter rootkit scanner, GParted partition editor, Disks disk management tool, Tor anonymity network client, Mozilla Firefox web browser, and Brasero CD/DVD burning software.
Bottom line
Even if its name makes you think that it is a project created by the Mafia, in fact DonLinux is a pretty simple, stable and basic operating system that will help you to recover various lost data from damaged disks or repair OSes that won’t boot anymore.
