GNU social will allow webmasters to run their very own personal Twitter-like website where users can register and then start sharing messages with each other.
They can easily set it up using the built-in installer, GNU social working with both MySQL and MariaDB setups.
If everything went right, admins will be able to login and then configure the portal using a special administration backend.
Here they can control registration settings, sharing options, the site's branding, license details, notices, access rights, and active plugins.
On the frontend, GNU social lets users also edit their profile just like on Twitter, allowing them to manage avatars, language and timezone settings, subscription policies, polls, connections, OpenID settings, and various other profile finer details.
Users will also be able to follow anyone registered on the site, while also being able to broadcast and tag their statuses.
Since this continues the work of StatusNet (Laconica), if you ever worked with such a social network you'll feel right at home.
