Apache SpamAssassin uses a combination of different techniques to identify spam email and their adjacent signatures.

The system uses a wide variety of methods to identify and tag spam, from heuristic and statistical analysis, either on the email's header or its body content.

Once detected, spam email is tagged and fed to the email server so it can be treated with. SpamAssassin never takes any other action on the emails except tagging them, leaving email filtering or deletion to more powerful, more adequate software, concentrating on what it does best.

The SpamAssassin package comes with a CLI utility and support for processing large volumes of mail, all packaged as easy to install, standard Perl modules.

If the standard tests aren't enough for you, then you can also extend its anti-spam capabilities by taking the given examples and bolstering them with your own algorithms as well.

The entire system is quite easy to configure and can work with a large collection of email systems from the classic Postfix and Sendmail to more niche systems like qmail or procmail.
