The term "native template engine" refers to the fact it uses classic code to insert content inside placeholders/markers based on a simple set of criteria.
The opposite of a native template engine is the likes of Smarty or Twig, complex systems that use their own syntax. These are compiled template engines. While more powerful, these take more time to get accustomed to if you never used one before.
Plates follows the same principles as compiled templated engines like Twig and Smarty, but uses a native templating approach instead.
This automatically means there far more less time spent on getting documented on how the template language works, and far more time spent on writing the actual templates and layouts.
