Welcome to the Natty Narwhal edition of Ubuntu Enteprise Cloud, an Eucalyptus-powered product that can be used by advanced users with special requirements to deploy the Ubuntu Linux operating system in the cloud in a shortest time as possible and without paying for expensive solutions.

Features at a glance

Key features include the ability to run on an existing cloud system powered by Ubuntu, ability to run on the Amazon EC2 cloud platform, support for the KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) hypervisor, as well as support for the SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) protocol with Web Services security.

Additionally, the project includes several basic cloud administration utilities that allow the user to configure packages and the cloud system in no time and with minimum effort, support for supple IP assignment, and support for a wide range of cloud management tools.

Availability and supported architectures

Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud 11.04 was officially announced by Canonical on April 28, 2011, as part of the Ubuntu Server operating system. It was supported until October 28, 2012 and available for download as tar archived cloud images in the IMG file format, designed to support both 64-bit and 32-bit architectures.

Getting started with UEC

As you might know, Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud has been designed as part of the Ubuntu Server operating system, allowing the user to install it from scratch on any machine with minimum effort. Also, you can deploy UEC on an existing cloud machine using the aforementioned cloud images. Detailed installation instructions are provided by Canonical at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEC?action=show&redirect=Eucalyptus.

Bottom line

Overall, Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) 11.04 has been the last release of this product to be powered by Eucalyptus, as upcoming versions will be based on the amazing OpenStack project and renamed to Ubuntu Cloud Server. As such, this version is no longer maintained and has been archived for historical purposes only.
